UNBC and CUPE 2278 ratify collective agreement

The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and CUPE 2278 have successfully ratified their first collective agreement consistent with the provincial government’s Sustainable Services Negotiating Mandate.

The parties reached a tentative agreement on September 13 after two months of negotiations. Members of CUPE 2278 ratified the agreement on September 17. UNBC’s Board of Governors ratified the agreement on September 19.

CUPE Local 2278 represents approximately 80 Graduate Teaching Assistants at UNBC.

“Bargaining provides an opportunity for both parties to exchange ideas, and I am pleased that both teams were committed to engaging in collegial discussion to reach an agreement that reflects the priorities of both parties,” said Professor Daniel Weeks, president and vice-chancellor of UNBC.

Highlights of the collective agreement include the following: 

  • A three-year term (July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2022);
  • General wage increases of 2%, 2% and 2%;
  • Fixed funding negotiated for training of new graduate teaching assistants; and
  • Collective Agreement language is written to ensure 100% gender neutrality.

The collective agreement is effective for a three-year term, expiring on June 30, 2022.

UNBC reaches tentative deal with CUPE 2278

The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and CUPE 2278 successfully reached a tentative agreement on September 13, 2019, consistent with the Sustainable Services Negotiating Mandate, and which outlines the terms of a first collective agreement for UNBC’s Teaching Assistants.

Both parties worked diligently throughout the evening on Friday to reach an agreement, and I thank everyone for their dedication and hard work to achieve a tentative deal.

The new contract, once ratified, will be effective until June 30, 2022.

Details of the agreement remain confidential pending ratification by the Board of Governors and the CUPE 2278 membership.

Date: April 5, 2019

On April 3, 2019, a vote took place at UNBC to certify a new Graduate Teaching Assistant bargaining unit. All employees of UNBC in a unit composed of graduate teaching assistants excluding student assistants and other student employees were entitled to vote. 

The University is awaiting further instruction from the British Columbia Labour Relations Board to determine next steps. Further updates will be provided on this page as new information is made availalbe.
