Overview

The Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII) and First Nations Centre (FNC) work collaboratively under the Associate Vice President, Indigenous (AVPI) at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) to advance the Indigenization of the campus through complementary yet distinct approaches. Together, these two teams operate within their distinct mandates while ensuring UNBC fulfills its institutional commitment to Indigenization and reconciliation.

The Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII)

The OII, through the AVPI, assists UNBC in following through with its commitments to the Indigenization of the institution and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. This work ensures that the university meets its obligations to Indigenous communities and upholds national and international Indigenous rights frameworks in meaningful and authentic ways.

The First Nations Centre (FNC)

The FNC provides essential student supports that are specifically designed to address the unique needs and experiences of Indigenous students within the university environment. These supports are crucial for breaking down systemic barriers and creating pathways for Indigenous student success.

Together, these departments address both the institutional transformation needed for reconciliation and the immediate, practical supports required for Indigenous students to thrive in their academic pursuits.
