Awards and Scholarships

Awards, Grants, Scholarships, Bursaries; these are a few of the financial aid avenues available to UNBC students. Below is a list of some of the opportunities available to History students.


Morrison Undergraduate Scholarship in History (BA (Honours) History, BA)
Available to a full-time undergraduate student in the BA program, with a major in History. The recipient must have taken at least three upper division History courses, but is not yet eligible to graduate.
Criteria: Academic excellence

Morrison Graduate Scholarship in History (MA History)
Available to a full-time graduate student in their first year of the MA program in History.
Criteria: Academic excellence

Northern BC Archives Graduate Research Scholarship – Through the contribution of an anonymous foundation and UNBC Office of Research & Graduate Programs, UNBC has established a $5000 graduate level research scholarship available to a full-time UNBC graduate student to pursue archival research at the Northern BC Archives for their graduate thesis or graduate project. Consult the Archives Research Guide https://library.unbc.ca/archives  for a listing of significant archival holdings relevant for thesis or graduate project work. Undergraduate History-Paper Prize (BA (Honours) History)
Available to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the BC program with a declared major in History.
Criteria: Satisfactory academic standing.

History Department Award of Excellence ((BA (Honours) History, BA)
Available to a full or part time undergraduate students enrolled in the BA program with a major in History. The level and quality of the student's engagement with the university and broader community will be considered.
Criteria: Minimum GPA of 3.33.

Ann McQuaid Memorial Scholarship (BA (Honours) History, BA)
Available to a student enrolled at UNBC who has completed at least 30 credit hours towards an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The recipient will have a demonstrable record of community service, involvement and leadership.
Criteria: Academic excellence.

Can-West Global Communications Undergraduate Bursary (BA (Honours) History)
Available to a full-time student with a declared major in northern-specific social science programs (Anthropology, Economics, First Nations Studies, History, International Studies, Northern Studies, Political Science, Women's Studies, Psychology). Preference will be given to First Nations Students and students expressing interest in careers, or pursuing further studies in broadcasting or electronic communications.
Criteria: Financial need and satisfactory academic standing.

Keith Gordon & Ted Williams Scholarship (BA (Honours) History)
Available to a full-time student enrolled and majoring in the Department of History. Candidates will have achieved at least a 3.67 GPA or A- average in their last semester of course work.
Criteria: Academic excellence.

Notary Foundation of BC Scholarship (BA (Honours) History, BA)
Available to a full-time undergraduate student who is in their third or fourth year of the Department of History or the Political Science Program and who has completed two of the following courses: Introduction to Law in Canada (POLS 255); Philosophy of Science (POLS 205); Canadian Law & Aboriginal Peoples (POLS 220) or Law & Municipal Government (POLS 250). First preference to a student who has a strong interest in pursuing their studies in the field of law.
Criteria: Academic proficiency.

Seniors Festival Bursary (BA (Honours) History, BA)
Available to a full-time student enrolled in the Faculty of Arts who has completed a minimum of 60 credit hours.
Criteria: Demonstrated financial need.

Jeanne Clarke Memorial Local History Award
This award is presented to an individual or individuals who have made a significant contribution to the field of local history. Awards may be presented in the following categories: 
Service Award: for an outstanding contribution to the field of local history
Publication award: for a recently published work that includes significant content contributing to local history.
Academic works of non-fiction meet the criteria for the Publication Award, but so do works of historical fiction, biographies or any publication that improves the appreciation and understanding of local history.
