Abstract: My personal teaching philosophy centres on the active engagement of students through experiential and problem-based learning. Teachers and professors are tasked with trying to relate to their pupils by providing multiple and diverse opportunities for learning within a course, while often confined in space and resources. We must be adaptable, provide opportunities for meaning engagement and student participation, and provide appropriate means of assessing learning. Hands-on learning activities give students opportunities to explore; students may not even realize they are learning. I believe dividing classroom time between lecturing new material and revisiting and reviewing material with activities and experiential learning, is essential to keeping today’s university students engaged.
During this one-hour lecture, I will highlight Ethnobotany (BIOL 350) as a case study on active engagement. Since taking over this course in 2018, I have found that this course is well suited to hands on, active learning. I will provide details on designing a course for active engagement, my ideas innovative assessment, and will talk about how I have tried to implement my teaching philosophy into my other courses at UNBC.
