Title: "Leveraging Technology to Better Support Older Adults in Northern British Columbia"

Description: As the population in northern BC continues to age over the next 20 years, the health system will face substantial challenges with their existing capacity to meet future demands. Keeping the status quo will result in excess demands for long term care facility and acute care services. Therefore, the time is now to think differently in how to support older persons to age with grace, remain independent for longer, and delay need for long-term care services. With the advances in technology there are numerous products available to support older persons at all stages of health however many of these innovative technologies being developed are not accessible for those in northern and rural communities.

We take a partnership approach with the Northern Health Authority (NHA), UNBC, and AGE-WELL to address this gap by establishing the Centre for Technology Adoption for Aging in the North – CTAAN. CTAAN is a collaborating center for innovations in technology development and implementation to support older adults in rural and northern communities. Through interlinked projects, CTAAN will enhance a streamlined uptake of technologies supporting adaptation, piloting, and implementation of existing technologies from Canada and beyond. CTAAN will measure the practical and theoretical impacts of enhanced accessibility, adoption, implementation and sustainable uptake of technology in northern BC and on older adult technology users in rural and northern communities.

In this presentation the Directors of CTAAN, Drs. Shannon Freeman and Richard McAloney, will discuss the centre’s goals, ongoing projects, and technologies to support older adults and caregivers. Learn how you can get involved with CTAAN and support older adults to continue to live in rural and northern communities with dignity and high quality of life.
