Dan KrausEndemic species are restricted to a particular geographical region, such as an ecoregion or country. This restricted range can increase their vulnerability to extinction. NatureServe Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada have developed the first comprehensive list and hotspot mapping of Canadian endemic species. We identified over 300 species, sub-species and varieties that have only been documented from Canada. Most Canadian endemic species are vascular plants and arthropods. Nationally endemic species occur across Canada with the highest numbers in B.C., Quebec and Yukon. The project also identified concentrations of endemic species, many of which are associated with glacial refugia or unique habitats. Most of Canada’s endemic species are of global conservation concern and few have been assessed by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada. Canada has full responsibility for these species. The results of this analysis can be used to prioritize conservation actions and to inspire public support for species and habitat protection in Canada.

The Natural Resources & Environmental Studies Institute (NRESi) at UNBC hosts a weekly lecture series at the Prince George campus. Anyone from the university or wider community with interest in the topic area is welcome to attend. Presentations are also made available to remote participants through Livestream (Channel 1). Go to http://www.unbc.ca/nres-institute/colloquium-webcasts to view the presentation remotely.

Past NRESi colloquium presentations and special lectures can be viewed on our video archive, available here.
