“Filling two needs with a single deed: the Prince George Cardiac Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program improves patient outcomes and student learning”
Date: September 12, 2019 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Speaker: Dr. Robin Roots
Room: UNBC 7-152
Abstract: Incidences of heart failure and COPD in Northern BC are higher than other health regions in British Columbia, and COPD exacerbation and cardiac arrest are respectively the second and fourth most common reasons for admission to hospital in Northern BC. Evidence shows that exercise and education rehabilitation programs prevent the reoccurrence of acute events, and have shown to be cost effective as compared to usual care. Yet these programs are provided by physiotherapists, of which there is a significant shortage in northern and rural regions. In partnership with Northern Health, the Masters of Physical Therapy (MPT) program developed and implemented a cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation program serviced by MPT students. This presentation will share findings of a quality improvement project, carried out in-part by students on clinical placement, that measured the effectiveness of these programs on participant outcomes and health system impact during the first two years of operation. Educational outcomes of community partnerships such as this will also be discussed.
