Title:  Introduction to Medical Physics & Radiation Physics Basics

Speaker:  Dr. Baochang Liu, BC Cancer Agency - Centre for the North, Prince George

Abstract:
Medical Physics has come a long way in the last 60 years or so, catching the interests of researchers from variety of different fields. The main goal of medical physics research is to apply physics and scientific knowledge in medicine to improve current technology in medical diagnostic and/or therapeutic treatments. This seminar will start with a brief introduction on general medical physics to give the audience some ideas about a few common research streams. Then focus will shift more on radiation oncology physics, which is one of the more clinically relevant subfields in medical physics. Radiation physics will be discussed from four aspects: basics physics, radiation dosimetry, treatment planning, and radiation protection. A clinical medical physicist in a radiation oncology department will be involved in all these aspects. The approach of this presentation will be attempted from both theoretical and clinical points of view in order to demonstrate the physics concepts and their applications.

Bio:
I completed my undergraduate degree in physics in China. I came to Canada to pursue my M.Sc. degree in Condensed Matter Physics at Brock University, followed by Ph.D. in Medical Physics at McMaster University. I then worked as post-doc in the Department of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania for two years. During my Ph.D. and post-doc times, I was interested in the field of photodynamic therapy (PDT), which uses lasers and drugs to treat diseases. In 2014, I moved back to Canada and completed the Radiation Oncology Physicist residency program at the Grand River Regional Cancer Center in Kitchener/Waterloo. I have been working as a Medical Physicist at BC Cancer – Center for the North in Prince George for just over one year now.
