UNBC's Global Fridays lecture series puts on regularly scheduled presentations every year. For UNBC's 25th Anniversary, a special presentation from Professor Andrei Markovits, from the University of Michigan, USA, was offered.

"Winter Sports: Sports Culture in Canada, the United States and Beyond”

While most sports that create a vast culture way beyond their actual playing field (or court) tend to be of the spring, summer or fall variety (all codes of football, baseball, cricket); the great game of hockey represents a winter-bound exception. The lecture explained the origins, characteristics and changing nature of these very few hegemonic sports that have proliferated in the world, and will end with a discussion of the shifts in cultural playing fields that we are currently experiencing.
