Anthropology in Our Backyards Presents

Walking the Land Back: Reclamation, Settler Spectacles, and Indigenous Healing

                                                                                     Dr Tara Joly, Assistant Professor

Department of First Nations Studies, UNBC

 Abstract:

What does it mean to “return the land” after oil sands extraction? This talk compares Indigenous Healing

Walks with corporate tours on reclaimed land. These two journeys reveal a tension: for Cree-Métis individuals,

reclamation must center wâhkôhtowin (kin relationship); for corporations, reclamation becomes a settler spectacle, ignoring sovereignty and healing.
