Keynote Speaker: Dr. Ray Markham

Title: Evidence into Action Through Partnership

Description: Translating research into meaningful, lasting change requires more than just data, it demands partnership. In this keynote, Dr. Ray Markham, a rural generalist physician and long-time system leader, will explore how evidence-informed approaches can be activated through intentional collaboration across communities, disciplines, and sectors. Drawing on practical case studies from rural British Columbia and international global health work, Dr. Markham will share strategies for researchers to effectively engage with policy makers, clinicians, and communities to support system transformation. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how partnerships grounded in mutual respect and shared goals can amplify research impact, particularly in complex or underserved settings.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Ray Markham has dedicated over 30 years to rural family practice, serving communities across the globe. Born in Zimbabwe and trained in South Africa, Ray’s career has taken him from rural Newfoundland to the British Army in the UK, and finally to Valemount, BC, where he continues to practice full-service rural medicine.

A recipient of the Order of British Columbia, Ray is recognized for his unwavering commitment to rural healthcare. He currently serves as Executive Director of the Rural Coordination Centre of BC and a Clinical Professor at UBC’s Department of Family Practice. His passion for improving health in remote and underserved communities has inspired work in Antarctica, Kenya, Haiti, and Zimbabwe.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating this inspiring keynote and the spirit of collaboration that drives our work.
