Housing information for students

Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 Residence

The following procedures and updates take into consideration the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community.

Housing applications

Housing applications have closed for Fall 2020 semester, but are still open for the Winter 2021 semester.

  • Deadline to cancel a Winter 2021 Housing application and receive a refund of your deposit and application fees was November 1, 2020

Meal plans

Meal plans are available for the upcoming school year. Please visit the Food Services website for details.

Housing capacity

UNBC Residence will be open at 50% occupancy for the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 semesters. There will be a maximum of two students per four-bedroom suite.

Despite fewer people in each of our Residence buildings to encourage physical distancing, our student and professional staff will be here for you. We will maintain our commitment to create a fun, supportive, and safe space with engaging activities and programs throughout the semester.

Winter Move-in

Winter semester move-in date for new students is scheduled for January 4 - 8 and 11, 2021. Move-in times will be booked and staggered throughout the day in order to ensure safe distancing and follow cleaning and sanitizing protocol.

Move-in appointment booking

Each student must book their move-in time, and will be expected to adhere to their move-in time. Because of safety requirements surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to be flexible with move-in times. If students arrive outside of their booked move-in appointment, they will be asked to wait until their designated time. Students were sent emails with booking instructions and will receive a confirmation email on December 17, 2020 with information on how to book their move-in time.

A maximum of two (2) family members or friends will be allowed to accompany and assist you during your move-in and they too will be expected to wear a mask.

Guests in Residence

Update: At this time, due to the current province-wide restrictions extended to February 5, 2021, you may not have any guests in your suite. If you live alone in your suite, you may have one (1) guest, but they must currently live in one of the Residence buildings.

Safety measures in Residence

We will continue to provide the services and amenities that align with guidance from health authorities, and help create a healthy, safe and supportive community environment. In addition to the reduced overall number of residents, here are some of the things we are doing:

  • Everyone is expected to wear a mask when they are outside of their suite.
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitizing throughout all common areas.
  • Additional hand sanitizer dispensers throughout Residence, as well as additional hand washing stations in laundry rooms.
  • Signage and information campaigns promoting physical distancing, hand-washing and safety protocols.
  • Elevator protocols have been adjusted and guidelines have been posted.
  • All Housing and Residence life staff have been trained to refer residents with cold or flu-like symptoms to the appropriate health care professional.

Quarantine (self-isolation) in Residence

All individuals arriving to Canada are required by the Canadian Government to quarantine (self-isolate) for 14 days and to self-monitor for symptoms. This requirement includes UNBC Residence students arriving from outside of Canada, whether they are returning to campus, or moving in for the first time.

If you are arriving from outside Canada, you must connect with the UNBC International department for assistance with your quarantine.

At this time, UNBC Residences are not able to accommodate the required 14-day quarantine (self-isolation) in Residence prior to Fall semester move-in.

Illness in Residence

A number of self-contained suites have been set aside for residents in the event of illness that may require self-isolation/quarantine support during the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 semesters. If this occurs, we will work closely with Northern Health to ensure all safety precautions are taken for ill individuals and other residents. Student residents who are ill are asked to contact the Housing Office for more information.

Please feel free to reach out to the Housing and Residence Life Team for support and guidance. Support services for students are available both on and off-campus.
