How do I tell which admission category I should apply under?
  • We have several different types of admission categories depending on your individual educational background. The UNBC Calendar provides detailed information. You can also direct any questions you have to the Office of Student Recruitment.

What is a PEN number? Do I need a PEN number?
  • A PEN number is your “Personal Education Number.” It is used for High School entry students so the University can access your grade reports from the Ministry of Education. Please be sure to sign off on your Options Form available from your high school guidance counselor.

Do I need a second language for admission into UNBC?
  • No. If English is your first language, a second language is not required for admission to UNBC. Languages on our “approved course list” can be used towards admissions but are not required.
  • If English is not a student’s first language, students must meet our English requirements.

What is UNBC's reputation?
  • Despite being one of Canada’s youngest universities, UNBC has quickly gained a national and international reputation for excellence. Don’t take our word for it. Maclean’s magazine has ranked UNBC fourth in Canada – and best in western Canada – among 22 small universities for the second year in a row. In 2005 and 2006, the only universities that ranked higher than UNBC were all more than 150 years old. Among the attributes that receive accolades are the professors, class sizes, and the high quality of the students attending the University. There are also provincial and national surveys of university students and graduates. Again, UNBC consistently ranks at or near the top of the list for student/alumni satisfaction. Finally, national surveys of research activity have shown that UNBC is even more research-intensive than some universities that have medical schools, contributing to UNBC’s reputation across Canada and around the world. Typically, UNBC ranks either first or second in Canada for its ability to publish research findings. Students are often directly involved with research, helping to contribute to new discoveries.

When should I apply?
  • Application deadlines vary depending on each program, though since UNBC does begin taking applications in September for the following year it is best to apply as early as possible. You can apply in person, online, or through the mail for any of the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters.
  • Note: it is a good idea to apply early so paperwork and the admission process are completed long before registration begins.

Do I need to apply for a specific program?
  • Yes, you need to specify your intended program on your application.

Can I switch programs after I apply?
  • If you applied in the area of Arts, Commerce and/or Science then you are able to switch programs after you apply.  Since the admission requirements for these three degree areas are essentially the same, students are free to explore their options in their first year.  However, once you have reached 10 classes or 30 credit hours you will be asked to declare a major so it is a good idea for you to speak with an Academic Advisor.

Can I upgrade my high school courses at UNBC?
  • You can upgrade some high school sciences at UNBC in order to meet course prerequisites. For example we offer the equivalent to Physics 12 and Math 12. However you cannot do general upgrading at UNBC; you must meet general admission requirements in order to take any class for credit at the university.

Are there certain steps I should be following for admission?

Should I be applying for each of the individual Nursing Cohorts separately?
  • Yes! Applicants interested in our Nursing programs in Prince George, Quesnel and Terrace must apply for each cohort separately.

  • All fees are due the first day of each semester.

Is housing available on campus?

How many classes do I take in my first year?
  • That depends on what is right for you.
  • Typically, in order to complete a degree in 4 years, students take 5 classes a semester – 10 classes a year; but with spring/summer classes and students taking an extra semester to finish a degree, anything goes. It is really about finding the right balance for you and your success. Academic Advisors are available throughout your university education to help you with this process.

When do I register for classes?
  • When you are admitted to UNBC, you may register, provided the course schedule has been finalized. This is usually in March. You can register online or in person.

Are there any ski hills in Prince George?
