PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – A late comeback effort from the UNBC women’s soccer Timberwolves fell just short, as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in Canada West exhibition play.

Madison Emmond (Prince George, B.C.) scored the lone goal for the Timberwolves in the 83rd minute to cut TRU’s lead in half, but UNBC was unable to find the equalizer.

With a driving rain hitting North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Field at the opening kickoff, the Timberwolves stumbled out of the gate, allowing the WolfPack to establish an attacking presence before Brianna Powrie (Kamloops, B.C.) put Thompson Rivers up 1-0 in the fifth minute.

Powrie’s powerful presence continued, as she set up Jaydene Radu (Calgary, Alta.) in the 11th minute, putting the WolfPack up two going into halftime.

UNBC’s best chance of the first half came in the 23rd minute. The Timberwolves thought they had scored, but Ashley Anderson (Prince George, B.C.) was just offside on an attempted cross from Tianna Rossi (Prince George, B.C.)

Neither team really established themselves for the majority of the second half, and chances were few and far between.

UNBC turned up its play in the final 10 minutes, breaking through with seven minutes to play as a cross from defender Taylor Samuelson (Prince George, B.C.) found its way to Emmond in the box.

She made no mistake from about 10 yards out, beating keeper Shalayna Isakson (Kamloops, B.C.) to bring the Timberwolves within one, and re-energizing the team for the remainder of the contest, though they would get no closer.

The Timberwolves take the field on Sunday morning at 11 against the MacEwan University Griffins, who will face the WolfPack on Saturday, also at 11.
