KELOWNA – A two-goal performance from Courtney Hemmerling (Kelowna, B.C.) led the UBC Okanagan Heat to a 3-0 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves at Nonis Field on Saturday.

Maya Bandy (Vernon, B.C.) also scored for the Heat (2-1-0), who outshot the Timberwolves 14-6 in the match.

Chloe Ainsworth (Manchester, England) picked up the clean sheet for the Heat, while Lianna Toopitsin (Prince George, B.C.) made three saves for the Timberwolves (0-3-0).

Hemmerling got the ball rolling for the Heat early, beating Toopitsin with a shot to the top right corner of the net for a 1-0 UBC Okanagan lead just two minutes into the match.

The Heat had an opportunity to expand their lead in the 19th minute, but Bandy’s shot attempt was stopped by Timberwolves defender Fiona Raymond (Prince George, B.C.)

Bandy added to the Heat advantage in the 24th minute, though, as she finished a UBC Okanagan attack by taking a cross from Hemmerling and tapping it past Toopitsin for a 2-0 UBC Okanagan lead at halftime.

UNBC’s best opportunity to get on the board came in the 78th minute, as halftime substitute Paige Payne (Kitimat, B.C.) picked up a pass from Tianna Pius (Prince George, B.C.) from just inside midfield. Payne got inside the 18-yard box, but her shot attempt went over the net.

Hemmerling iced the match for the Heat a short time later, taking advantage of a Timberwolves turnover and beating Toopitsin on the right side to wrap up the scoring.

The Timberwolves will try to get into the win column on Sunday at noon when they face the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack (0-3-0), who they defeated in an exhibition match in Edmonton in late August.

UBC Okanagan will try to sweep the weekend when they welcome the Alberta Pandas (2-0-1) to Kelowna at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Both games will be available on CanadaWest.TV.
