PRINCE GEORGE, B.C.
The University of Northern British Columbia’s Women’s soccer team has added a crucial piece to the roster, committing goalkeeper Brooke Molby for the 2017-2018 season.
The 19-year-old says the chance to make big saves at the university level is a great opportunity.
“I hate to lose. I like to be in that position where I can be the factor that stops those goals from going in and is a major contributor to the game.”
A native of Squamish, B.C., Molby visited the UNBC campus in March. Being able to practice and train with the current Timberwolves was critical in her decision to join the team.
“I think this is a really good, developing team. I like the idea of being a part of their progression,” she said. “I really like the girls. They are so nice.”
Molby is a product of the West Vancouver Soccer Academy, where she spent three years working on her game. Timberwolves coach Neil Sedgwick was impressed by her approach between the pipes.
“She is a battler. I am thrilled that Brooke will be joining us. She has a great deal of experience and will bring a strong technical foundation to the Timberwolves.”
Molby says training with Sedgwick and the Timberwolves made it clear that she could significantly improve under the watchful eye of the UNBC bench boss.
“I really like his demeanor as a coach. He isn’t super loud, and in your face. But he really understands goalkeeping, which is really important to me.”
A 2016 graduate of Sentinel Secondary School, Molby has played goalkeeper for more than ten years.
“People have told me that I have always been the quiet one in the back, who is very dependable. I like to be solid back there.”
With plans of studying Psychology at UNBC, Molby also has her eyes set on earning playing time in her freshman campaign with the Timberwolves.
“I would like to be a starter, but we will have to see how it goes. There will be other goalies coming in, so it should be a good competition.”
