PRINCE GEORGE – A late goal from Owen Stewart (Prince George, B.C.) propelled the UNBC Timberwolves to a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen at the Prince George Youth Soccer Association Fields on Sunday.

The winning marker was set up by a clever ball from Darin Kamsteeg (Victoria, B.C.) into Tofa Fakunle (Calgary, Alta.), who then crossed it in from the right wing. Francesco Bartolillo (Calgary, Alta.) got a head on it, but Stewart was there to pounce on a rebound and beat Wesmen keeper Joshua Partaker (Winnipeg, Man.) for his second goal of the season.

Bartolillo had the other goal for the Timberwolves (2-6-0), who outshot Winnipeg (0-7-1) 11-5 in the contest, and 7-2 in shots on goal.

Andrew Kliment (Winnipeg, Man.) had the lone goal for Winnipeg.

Mitch MacFarlane (Prince George, B.C.) earned the victory in goal for UNBC, while Partaker made five saves in a losing effort.

It took both teams a little while to get going, but once they did, it was a physical encounter featuring two yellow cards per side as neither team wanted to give the other an inch of space.

Bartolillo opened the scoring in the 26th minute, heading a ball over Partaker’s outstretched arms for his second of the season following a cross from Cody Gysbers (Victoria, B.C.)

Kliment answered three minutes later for the Wesmen, picking off a UNBC pass and beating MacFarlane bottom line to level the scoreline at 1-1 heading into halftime.

UNBC had a great opportunity to go up early in the second half, but Bartolillo’s shot off a James Stephens (Abbotsford, B.C.) corner kick was stopped by Partaker, who did a great job of keeping the game level for the Wesmen.

Following Stewart’s goal, Winnipeg’s best chance to salvage a point came in added time, but the shot from Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei (Winnipeg, Man.) was stopped by MacFarlane.

The Timberwolves head to Calgary next weekend to battle the University of Calgary Dinos (Sept. 24, 2:15 p.m. Mountain) and the Mount Royal University Cougars (Sept. 25, 1:30 p.m. Mountain), while the Wesmen return home to face the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (Sept. 23, 6:30 p.m. Central) and the Trinity Western University Spartans (3 p.m. Central).

Both games will be available on CanadaWest.TV.
