Are students covered?
There are three issues commonly raised concerning students:
1. Are their actions to other students insured by the Protection Program?
- No. These types actions are not covered by the Program.
2. Are their actions while working in a practicum program at a standard work site covered by
the Program?
- Generally, yes. The Program covers the negligent acts of students, in the absence of a contrary agreement between the practicum employer and the institution.
3. Are they covered if injured while participating in a practicum program?
- Not by the Protection Program. However, students participating in practicum programs at standard work sites of an employer within the Province of British Columbia are covered by Workers’ Compensation Board coverage
4. Are they covered for WCB while on a Co-op work placement?
- They are employees of their work site employer and should check with the employer to ensure that they will be provided Workers’ Compensation Board coverage.
