  Building & Fire Evacuation

Overview

The organization of the safety program is designed to facilitate knowing the regulations with which we must comply, accepting responsibility for safety on various levels, and fulfilling our obligations. UNBC's Occupational Health & Safety Policy identifies compliance with all relevant statutes, regulations and standards of government agencies (and other regulatory authorities relevant to occupational health) minimum requirements.

Building Alarms at the Prince George Campus

The core campus buildings (Administration Bldg., Conference & Fitness Centre, Power Plant Bldg., Laboratory Bldg., Library Building and Agora Building) are equipped with a two-stage alarm system. In certain circumstances the alarm bells will ring intermittently before ringing steadily. The two different stages are an indication of the possible device(s), which have been set off.

All other campus buildings are equipped with a single-stage alarm system which means the alarm bells will ring steadily upon the initiation of any alarm activating device (i.e. smoke detector, heat detector, pull station, etc.)

Evacuation is to commence upon the ringing of the alarm bells regardless of whether the ringing is intermittent or steady.

Fire and Evacuation Procedures

IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE OR SMELL SMOKE
  • IMMEDIATELY, sound the fire alarm by activating the nearest red alarm pull station.
  • Call Security at a phone outside the affected area. Dial 3333. If you are calling from the Residence Building, or from a private cellular phone, Dial (250) 960-7000. Tell them you are reporting a fire. If in proximity to a Help Line (press button and speak) or Public Telephone (press yellow button labelled "S", use this means to report the fire.)
  • If you are qualified, attempt to extinguish or control the fire using an available fire extinguisher.
  • If you cannot control the fire, isolate it by closing the doors. Leave the building by the nearest safe exit and proceed to the nearest assembly point outside the building.
  • DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS

WHEN YOU HEAR THE FIRE ALARM EVACUATION SIGNAL
  • Follow the instructions of the Fire Wardens
  • Leave the building by the nearest exit and proceed to the nearest assembly point outside the building
  • DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS
  • DO NOT GO BACK INTO THE BUILDING FOR ANY REASON. The Fire Department will notify Security personnel when it is safe to re-enter the building. Security personnel will notify you when it is safe to re-enter the building.

Building Evacuation Routes / Plaques

  • FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE EVACUATION ROUTES well enough that you could find your way out of the building in darkness.
  • Evacuation routes within all campus buildings are identified on red Evacuation Plan plaques which are conspicuously located in the hallways at each level. Please familiarize yourself with these routes as well as the geography of each building you be occupying for any period of time.
