Commercialization
Recognising the unique role of universities as public institutions of higher learning with an explicit mandate to produce new knowledge, the University should strive to produce benefits to society by publicising research findings and, where appropriate, by encouraging the application of research results in tangible ways which may include commercial activities. Research outcomes are in one or more forms of intellectual property (IP). The Technology Transfer Offie will work with the creators of IP to determine the appropriate path for commercialisation based not only on the IP but also on the abilities and desires of the creator. Possibilities include sale of the IP, licensing the IP, and building a company around the IP.

The Technology Transfer Office encourages the disposition of intellectual property in ways which assure maximum benefit to the creators, to the University and to society-at-large, without whose participation the intellectual property (IP) could not have been generated.

A policy dealing with IP and its commercialisation at UNBC is currently under development.

Patenting
If you feel your research has the potential to lead to a commercially viable invention you are encouraged to contact the Technology Transfer Office as early in the process as practical.  In any case, if you are a faculty member the Faculty Agreement states:

40.4 …any Member who has made an invention, …with the use of University equipment,                 supplies, facilities, or resources, or with resources administered by the University, which the                Member believes may be worthy of patent protection, shall offer a contract to the University in a        timely fashion, and in any event before submission for publication …

In addition the Technology Transfer Office will provide some assistance and advice for inventions made outside the university.

We also can help obtain copies of issued patents and help with patent searches.

Contract Issues
The Technology Transfer Office works closely with other members of the Office of Research and the Research Contract Coordinator in the review of research contracts. The Technology Transfer Office is particularly concerned with clauses with respect to intellectual property and its ownership; confidentiality and data ownership/disposition and all industrial research contracts.   For all contract research projects please consult with us before presenting a budget to potential clients so that we can help ensure that the charges for indirect costs (overheads) are appropriate.
