Since its opening in 1994, the University of Northern
British Columbia (UNBC) has recognized that research is a high priority. Improving
health and access to health services is a large part of the community mandate
of UNBC and its partners.
CIHR Funding opportunities are
being added weekly.
Major health disparities exist between Canadians
living in the North and those living in the more urbanized south. Northern BC
has unique demographics that influence health patterns, including both the
highest proportion of children and the most rapidly growing population of
seniors in the Province. In addition, Northern BC is home to a large First Nations population and an economy that
brings wealth to BC through industries in which developing and maintaining high
levels of occupational health and safety is challenging. As a region
that is seeing the most dramatic impacts of climate change, Northern BC
is well positioned to lead Canada in defining the health and social impacts of
climate change and developing solutions to allow future populations to adapt to
a rapidly changing world.
UNBC is committed to innovation to
improve health in all its facets; health care delivery, environmental health,
social determinants of health – to name a few. Health research at UNBC engages
faculty from many disciplines and involves vibrant partnerships with the
Northern Health Authority and Provincial, National and International research
networks. Pursuing better health outcomes through research in
Northern BC is our passion.
