Construction Starts on Northern University Student Centre

February 12, 2008
After many years of planning, construction is beginning this week on a renovation to UNBC’s former Fitness Centre that will see it transformed into a Northern University Student Centre. The project is being led by the Northern Undergraduate Student Society (NUGSS).

The $2.4 renovation will cover about 20,000 square feet and include administration offices for NUGSS, CFUR campus radio, Over the Edge student media, the Prince George Public Interest Research Group (PGPIRG), space for student clubs, student lounge areas, and a campus pub that will include space for concerts and events.

IDL Projects Inc. of Prince George is undertaking the construction.

NUGSS is inviting the media and the entire campus community to a ceremony this Friday to mark the start of construction. The event will include a presentation about the Student Centre, refreshments, and a ceremonial wall demolition led by UNBC President Don Cozzetto and NUGSS President Liam Iliffe. The ceremony will begin at noon across from the Canfor Theatre.

It’s expected that the Northern University Student Centre will officially open in September, 2008.
