GOVERNOR GENERAL TO VISIT UNBC

September 29, 2004 for immediate release

Governor General Adrienne Clarkson will be visiting the University of Northern British Columbia's Prince George campus on Wednesday, October 6th.

"We're delighted to welcome the Governor General to the University and we welcome the opportunity to engage with her on the key issues related to northern development," says UNBC President Charles Jago.

Her Excellency will be speaking at a public panel discussion on Canada's role as a northern nation and the possibility of the circumpolar. The presentation will begin at 2:30pm in the Weldwood Theatre (7-238), which is adjacent to the Bookstore. Other panelists will include Mayor Colin Kinsley, Canada Research Chair and northern researcher Greg Halseth of the UNBC Geography program, and Paul Michel, Director of UNBC's First Nations Centre. The discussion will be moderated by UNBC Anthropology professor Jim MacDonald, who was one of the Canadians who accompanied the Governor General during her state visits to Finland and Iceland in 2003.

Following the panel discussion, the Governor General will accompany UNBC President Charles Jago on a tour of the Prince George campus, including the new Northern Health Sciences Centre. The tour will begin at 4:30pm.

A leading figure in Canada's cultural life, Madame Clarkson has had a distinguished career in broadcasting, journalism, the arts and public service. She has appointed Governor General in 1999.

On this tour of northern BC, Madame Clarkson will also visit Terrace and the Nass Valley, where she will present the insignia of Officer to the Order of Canada to Nisga'a elder Rod Robinson. Romeo LeBlanc was the last Governor General in Prince George, when he visited the City and University in May, 1999.
