Smithers
Smithers is a community of approximately 5,000 in the valley of the Bulkley River in Wet'suwet'en territory, at the foot of Hudson's Bay Mountain. The economy of the valleyincludes a substantial number of small farming operations, as well as retail sales and government services; summer tourism and winter skiing attract numerous visitors. The nearby Wet'suwet'en community of Moricetown relies on services from Smithers, and School District 54 serves both communities, as well as nearby Telkwa and Quick. Northwest Community College offers a diploma in Forestry in Smithers, as well as a small selection of university transfer courses. UNBC has offered First Nations Studies courses in Wet'suwet'en language and culture in partnership with Moricetown, and in 1998 offered two intensive Resource Recreation and Tourism courses in Smithers. UNBC web courses are accessible in Moricetown and Smithers.
