Kitimat
Kitimat is a relatively new town of almost 12,000 people, built to house the workers for Alcan's smelter, established in the area in the 1950s in the territories of the Haisla people. The skilled workers who immigrated to the community from all over the world attracted other industries to the valley, including Eurocan and Methanex. The community is now served by a deep water port and is slated to be the terminus of an LNG pipeline. School District 82 serves the community of Kitimat, but the nearby Haisla community at Kitamaat Village runs its own school system. NWCC offers a certificate in Business, and UNBC has offered several levels of Haisla language courses in partnership with Kitamaat Village. The Kitimat Community Skills Centre offers a range of short-term training to fill the needs of local industry and students, and has also partnerships with the Open Learning Agency and SAIT.
