The
community of Likely has a year round population of approximately 300
residents and as many as twice that during the summer months. It has
traditionally been a mining and logging community with recreation and
tourism now an important aspect of the local economy. The community was
originally called Quesnel Dam during the gold rush era and remnants of
the dam can still be seen downstream of the bridge in Likely.
The name was changed to honour John A. Likely of the Bullion Pit Mine
who was also nicknamed "Plato" for his philosophizing. Many services
are offered in Likely. The closest city is Williams Lake (population 30,000) located approximately 1 hour west on Highway
