It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to UNBC.
For some of you, this message is also a welcome to a new career as a faculty member. It is a wonderful career choice, combining limitless opportunities and freedom for exploration with a unique obligation to share the results of your inquiries with the world. After many years in the profession, I can say that there is no career more important and none more satisfying.
As a relative newcomer to UNBC myself, my reasons for coming to UNBC that may resonate with your own. Many universities dedicate themselves to the three-fold mission of teaching, research, and service, as do we, but the students we teach at UNBC, as talented as they are, are in many cases the first in their family to attend university or college, and they form one of the most diverse student bodies in the country. Our research is world-class and growing dramatically in import. Our service to the community, to scholarship, and to the world is matched with a dedication to engage and to invigorate our region. UNBC is indeed a special place.
UNBC is marking several "firsts" this year including:
-
The AASHE Award for Best Campus Sustainability project, tied for first with Harvard,
-
"Best in the West": rated the best small university by MacLean's rankings, as the best small university west of Atlantic Canada,
- First among universities in our category for research, as rated by Research InfoSource.
I know you will feel at home at UNBC, and that you will be successful here. It is a welcoming and supportive community. UNBC has available a number of
resources and services to help you make the transition to living and working here. In the coming months we will be conducting workshops on topics including orientation, promotion and tenure, and teaching and learning. I look forward to working with you in making UNBC a great place to be.
