What's Here
Block Transfer --- Graduating with a BC Tourism Management Diploma?
Course-by-Course Transfer Credit
Transferring to the ORTM Program
- Completed a diploma in tourism or outdoor recreation?
- Started a
tourism/recreation degree program elsewhere and are interested in
coming north?
- Maybe you have been studying something completely different and are ready for a career change.
If you’ve started your studies
elsewhere and are interested in nature-based tourism, outdoor recreation, parks
and protected areas, or conservation – consider transferring to UNBC’s Outdoor
Recreation and Tourism Management program. Transferring
to the UNBC ORTM program is easily done. We welcome students to either
the BA or BSc program who have started studies at other institutions.
University/College transfers are pretty common here at UNBC and you'll
find lots of students in the ORTM program who have come from other
places and programs.
Transfers happen in two major ways:
-
Block transfer (recently approved
for graduates of the BC Tourism Management Diploma) or
- Individual course-by-course
transfer credit

Courtney graduated with a TM Diploma from Capilano in December 2007 and transferred up to UNBC and the ORTM program in January of this year. She'll be able to graduate by December 2009. |
If you've started studies in tourism and recreation elsewhere -- or even if you are switching from a different major -- there are often course-by-course transfer credits applicable to you that can cut down the time you need to complete a degree and avoid repeating coursework. The BC Government maintains a website
to help students figure out existing transfer agreements -- this is a
good place to start. However, as we've just updated and changed our
name and courses many of these transfer agreements were out of date -- we’ve recently been renewing and expanding transfer agreements for
the ORTM program. Check the online guide to see what transfer
agreements are in place. *Note that our former program name
was Resource Recreation and Tourism (RRT) – you may still see transfers to UNBC
RRT courses – but look for transfers to ORTM courses. If you don’t see these –
we may not have updated course articulations with your institution yet. Never fear ... we can work this out... just see below.

For example Dan came to us after completing a
Forest Technicians diploma …but was keen to
switch to the ORTM BSc in Natural Resources with a Major in Outdoor Recreation
and Conservation. Looking at Dan’s transcript it was easy to see he had
completed many of the 1st and 2nd year natural resource
requirements common to both degrees… this meant Dan just needed to supplement
his course work at the lower levels with the specific outdoor recreation
courses – then he could move quickly into his upper level studies. Dan graduated from the program and now works as a recreation planner.

Transferring from a program we haven’t got a current articulation
agreement with?
If your program or courses don't appear in the online transfer guide or appear outdated -- don't worry. This is not uncommon
– you may come from a university or college program that we just haven’t
completed (or updated) an agreement with yet– or maybe your studies weren’t in tourism or
outdoor recreation – that doesn’t mean transfer credit isn’t available – it
just means we’ll need to look at your courses to figure out what can count for
credit.
What do we need to determine
transfer credit?
A list of courses (including full
course name/numbers and credits).
A copy of the official course
syllabus for that course (you can help us here by working with your original
institution to email a copy of the course syllabus – if you haven’t saved it –
to us directly.
A Recommendation!
Don’t wait to figure out course
transfers until you get here – contact us in advance – this will help you avoid
repeating courses that you may not need to take.
Special Agreements and Programs
ORTM and the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)
The ORTM partnership with NOLS is starting to produce dividends as the
two organizations are now marketing each others course and program
offerings, but are also in the process of articulating NOLS courses to
be available for university credit through UNBC. This process is
ongoing, so please email Pat Maher for more
information.
