Helpful Info for Parents of New Students
Suggestions from former first year students and their parents
- Write or E-mail (even if they don’t write back) – Students love to get letters, but do not always have the time to write back.
- Ask questions – Most students appreciate it when their parents take an interest in what they are doing.
- Don’t ask your child if they are homesick
– The power of suggestion can be very strong, and you must remember
that even if your child does not say they are homesick, they still miss
you.
- Do not worry (too much) – Be patient with
those “nothing is going right and I hate this place” phone calls or
letters. Remember that you are offering a real service by giving
advice or just being there to hear what they are saying.
- Trust them – One student said “One of the
most important things that my mother ever wrote to me was, ‘I love you,
and I want you to have all the things that make you happiest. And in
the end, you know better than I do what those things are.’”
- Don’t give lectures – Discuss the use of alcohol and other lifestyle choices your son/daughter will have to make.
- Encourage them to ask if they do not know
– All the support services offered at UNBC are here for the student’s
benefit; they just have to ask. Your familiarity with UNBC will help
you act as a useful resource for your son or daughter as well.

Choosing an Academic Program:
- Most first-time university students are not sure what their career will turn out to be so few have a definite major in mind.
- Usually young people are still developing self-awareness and are
discovering what field of study would fit their personality and talents.
- Both UNBC Colleges request you declare a major only after
completing 30 credit hours of study – typically the start of the
student’s second year.

Tips for Offering Long Distance Support
- Remember: While you may be constantly worrying about your child’s
diet, accommodations, and friends, they will be missing the support of
family and friends.
- There are ways to make your fledgling student feel as if you are
not that far away - letters or cards for special occasions or just for
laughs; a surprise phone call; and “care packages” are a connection to
home.
- Early in the first term, the novelty of being at university will
wear off. Hearing from home around midterms and finals can help a
student refocus and re-energize.
- December is a stressful month for new students writing often their
first university exams. Getting some well-timed encouragement can help
your daughter or son keep going as she or he plows through notes and
late night studying.
