Enjoy... The Arts
Theatre & Dance
Not
only is it great to view performances ranging from Theatre Sports to
Shakespeare at the Prince George Playhouse but it's also easy to get involved
behind the scenes. Two companies put on theatrical presentations in
Prince George: The Prince George Theatre Workshop consists of local
actors, while Theatre Northwest brings in professional
performers.
If you are interested in dance, you can compete in the
impressive dance festival in March. For those seeking instruction, try Judy Russell's Enchainement Dance Studio,
Lorna Corbutt's School of Dance (652-9243) or Excalibur Theatre Arts
Company.
Music
Prince George is home to a thriving music scene. There are a
couple of websites that can help you stay connected to the bands, their
members, their events, and pretty much anything else you wanted to know
about music in the Northern Capital.
| Rock, Pop & Indie
- Such big names as the Tragically Hip, ZZ Top,
Matt Mays & El Torpedo, I Mother Earth, Big Sugar, and 54-40 have
performed in
Prince George. Venues vary from the big CN Centre to the
intimate Northwood Winter Garden at UNBC. UNBC staff and students are very involved in the local
music scene, with members in bands including the Goat
Island Extrapolation, Bees Careful, Hello China, The Lines We Drew,
the Northern BC Free Jazz Ensemble, and The Dazzlebrights. All can be found on
the above PG Music Wiki. | | Country - Live country music at the Cadillac Ranch. | | Blues - The Blues Underground Network is a non-profit society
that holds dances and events featuring blues music. Check out Earshot Online for more information. Maximum Blues Productions has brought in
names such
as Downchild. | | Jazz - Live Jazz music can be heard every Friday and
Saturday night at the Waddling Duck (561-5550) or occasionally on
Friday nights at Cafe Voltaire (Books & Co - 563-6637). | | Classical - The local PG Symphony Orchestra has some excellent
talent. The Symphony avoids stuffiness by making their programs
entertaining - and features a series on campus in the Atrium. |

There's a range of musical styles at the PG Folkfest.

Exploration Place traces the development of Prince George from the
fur trade to the present in a fun setting. They also bring in various
exhibitions during the course of the year. If you're into
railways, the PG Regional Railway & Forest Industry Museum will be a delight.

Writing
Through earthy undertones and stimulants, poets jive in coffee
shops, while others craft their prose on park benches, or meet for
coffee and dessert to critique the plots of their novels. The written
arts are alive at UNBC within the English department, where several of
the professors have published works. English students also have their own publication.
The writing community is somewhat
reclusive, but a good place to seek out other writers is UNBC Professor
Rob Budde's blog, Writing Way North. The Prince George Public Library holds readings and also has a public board with tidbits of information.

UNBC English students sell their own creative writing.
