Front Lines: Portraits of Caregivers in Northern British Columbia
This is a book about the people who provide health care across
the landscapes of northern British Columbia, a geography often
described as unhealthy, as chronically under serviced, and as
overlooked in an era of medical specialization and urban focus.
Responding to this deficit perspective, this book instead celebrates
caring people and the stories that comprise their lives. It is a book,
comprised of photographs and narratives, that draws linkages between
the land and the character of people choosing to live in and serve
northern, rural, and remote communities. While many people lament the
lack of physicians or health care providers, it will make the case that
a very special collection of people are providing innovative and deeply
caring services to people from the interior of the province through to
the Yukon border and along the Pacific northwest coast. The book will
discuss personal biographies of health care providers in northern
British Columbia with images depicting them at work and play in the
landscapes they love. The publication is expected to be completed in Spring 2011 and is a collaboration between NMP faculty member
Dr Sarah de Leeuw and photographer Tim Swanky.
