A widely-asked question about offshore oil and gas is whether it is likely to bring opportunities for employment or entrepreneurship to the Northwest Coast communities. It is generally agreed that whether much positive benefit is realized depends on how prepared and trained local people are for the needs of this new industrial sector. By way of beginning to explore training and education needs, UNBC has funded Northwest Community College to thoroughly survey the kinds of work and opportunity associated with offshore oil and gas and to assess its own current capacity to provide training. Based on this analysis, recommendations were developed for how NWCC might meet this need, and a broader assessment was conducted of other BC programs and institutions in regard to offshore vocational training. The analysis and suggestions in this report can also be adapted by other post-secondary institutions.
