The Queen Charlotte Basin is home to what are some of the only living examples of sponge reefs in the world. These structures were thought to be extinct until the late 1980s. The federal government's Pacific Geoscience Centre in Sidney, BC has led the way in seeking a better understanding of the extent and significance of these reefs. Because the protection of these features is important and could affect the direction of hydrocarbon exploration and development, UNBC contributed to an extension of PGS's ongoing survey work using multi-beam techniques. As a result of this contribution, added effort could be made in compiling existing data as well as doing new surveys. Public release of instructive maps of the reef complexes and accompanying reports are anticipated in early 2005.
