The Institute is UNBC's first formally sanctioned research institute. It was created with the goal of furthering the University's mandate of "A University in the north, for the north ... to improve the quality of life in its region ... by attaining the highest standards of undergraduate and graduate teaching, learning, and research." (Planning Committee Report, 1996)

The Northern Land Use Institute (NLUI) provides opportunities for northern communities to link with UNBC faculty members, graduate students, and others affiliated with the University.


Purpose:

The purpose of the Northern Land Use Institute is to support research focused on land use issues pertinent to Northern BC.

Objectives:

This purposes is driven by the following objectives:

  • To facilitate the transformation of research into policy and practice, thereby improving land use, resource and environmental management at the local and regional levels.
  • To promote collaborative, interdisciplinary research in partnership with public agencies, the private sector, local communities and First Nations which address the opportunities and challenges in northern communities.
  • To assist northern communities to undertake long term planning and land development that achieves economic, social and environmental sustainability.
  • To assist northern communities to access information and expertise related to land use planning and development, environment and resource management.
  • To provide northern communities with unique educational and informational opportunities.
