MBB: Cascades cut Timberwolves' win streak short

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The battle of the big men came down to the wire as University of Fraser Valley Cascades downed the UNBC Timberwolves 77-71 Friday night at the Northern Sport Centre. The Cascades move back into the winners circle with a 16-1 record, while the Timberwolves four game win streak is cut short, falling to 9–8 on the season.

The Cascades were led by Jasper Moedt (Abbotsford, BC) with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Kevon Parchment (Toronto, ON) added 16 points and five rebounds.

Franco Kouagnia (Yaounde, CMR) was big for the Timberwolves. The fifth year centre chipped in his fifth double-double of the season with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Rhys Elliott (Adelaide, AUS) put up 12 points and five rebounds to help in the Timberwolves effort to upset the Cascades.

The Cascades kicked off the game with a bang, going on a 13-2 run. A UNBC time-out put a halt to the Cascades run but not to their hot streak. Shooting 77 percent from the field UFV dominated the first quarter leading 23-14 after the first 10 minutes. Kouagnia brought the Timberwolves back in the second quarter, netting 10 of his 26 points. The big man was able to keep the Timberwolves close while Vijay Dhillon (Richmond, BC) hit a couple big shots to kill the Timberwolves momentum. At the half the Cascades held on to a 42-32 lead.

The Timberwolves perseverance paid off late in the third when they were able to close the gap to single digits. With 1:15 left in the quarter Billy Cheng (Richmond, BC) hit a big three to close the gap to 57-54 but Moedt came down the floor and immediately answered with one of his own to spread the gap to six. Kouagnia went 1-2 from the foul line to finish the quarter, putting the Timberwolves back five points 60-55.

Back and forth play kept the game close in the fourth. The Timberwolves were able to close the gap to two points, the closest they would get to over coming the Cascades, but again Moedt put an end to their streak with a three. Spreading their lead to five points the Cascades were able to maintain control for the remainder of the quarter, finishing 77-71 over the Timberwolves.

Both teams will return to the Norther Sport Centre tomorrow night for the Timberwolves final home game of the season. The game is set to tip-off at 7:25 p.m. PST and can be viewed live at canadawest.tv
