WBB: Timberwolves suffer fourth quarter blues

PRINCE GEORGE, BC – The Timberwolves held the Griffins close until the final 10. Trailing only two at half the Timberwolves fell to the Griffins 77-63 at the final whistle Friday night at the Northern Sport Centre.

Fourth year forward Megan Wood (Edmonton, AB) was instrumental in the MacEwan University Griffins road win. Wood netted 30 points and added six boards. Kari Kubinec (Trochu, AB) and Kelly Fagan (Vancouver, BC) put up 14 and 13 respectively.

The Timberwolves were led by rookie forward Vasiliki Louka (Athens, GRE). Louka stood out for the home side with 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Sarah Robin (Prince Rupery, BC) put up 15 points while Jasprit Nijjar (Vancouver, BC) led the team in rebounds with eight.

Starting the game with a bang, MacEwan University ‘s Megan Wood (Edmonton, AB) opened up the game with a three.  This led to a high scoring first quarter, with the Griffins leading 24-20 at the end of the first. The Timberwolves made a late surge with a pair of jumpers from fifth year forward, Sarah Robin (Prince Rupert, BC). The Griffins had an efficient second quarter, failing to concede one turnover. But the Timberwolves shooting was hot, with Vasiliki Louka (Athens, GRE) and Sarah Robin (Prince Rupert, BC) leading the way. The Griffins managed to escape the Timberwolves hot second quarter with a close 38-36 lead going into the second half.

The Griffins continued to control the second half starting the third quarter off with a 15-0 run but the Timberwolves answered back with a run of their own late in the third. Nine unanswered points for the Twolves kept UNBC close, trailing by only six points heading into the final 10 minutes.

Wood was dominant in the fourth quarter, scoring 12 of her 30 in the final 10 minutes alone. Cassie Rerick (Prince George, BC) battled to bring the Timberwolves back, netting five points in three consecutive possessions. But the Griffins proved too much for the Timberwolves, defeating the home side 77-63.

The Griffins win advances them to 11-4 on the season, while the Timberwolves fall to 2-13. Both teams return to the Northern Sport Centre tomorrow night for their final game of the series. The game is set to tip off at 5 p.m. PST and can be viewed live at canadawest.tv
