Timberwolves earn first win of season in home opener

Prince George, BC - The Timberwolves came out with a convincing victory at their home opener this Friday night at the Northern Sports Centre. The UNBC Timberwolves defeated the MRU Cougars 71-60. The Timberwolves move on to (1-4) as the MRU Cougars fall to (2-3) on the season.

The Timberwolves came out on top after a rough, hard fought battle against the Cougars. Timberwolves guard Rhys Elliot (Adeliade, AUS) led the way with 14 points, three rebounds and two assists. While Jeff Chu (Vancouver, BC) and Franco Kouagnia (Yaounde, CMR) also added 13 points each to the Timberwolves' total. MRU forward James Lefebvre (Didsbury, AB) had a strong game with 14 points, and seven rebounds. While Wiande Kher (Calgary, AB) finished the game three for three from the three point line and ended with nine points.

The Timberwolves were first on the board with a tough lay-in from Devin McMurtry (Surrey, BC) just nine seconds into the game. Remaining strong on the inside Devin recorded eight rebounds on the night. UNBC showed depth from the bench with great performances from Rhys Elliot (Adeliade, AUS) and Vaggelis Loukas (Athens, GRE) who combined finished the game with 19 points. The Timberwolves were strong throughout the duration of the game and led at all times. Which resulted in their first win of the season.

The MRU Cougars came out with a fast, direct approach but the size and strength of the Timberwolves was too much. They struggled on the glass, losing 41-33 in the rebound battle. The MRU Cougars were close at halftime, only trailing 32-27. But their second half start wasn't as fast as they would have hoped, going down by 15 points in the first 5 minutes.

Both the MRU Cougars and the UNBC Timberolwolves will return to action tomorrow night at the Northern Sports Centre. The game is set to tipoff at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live at canadawest.tv
