Second half push propels no.1 Spartans to win over Timberwolves

Tianna Pius challenge

Prince George, BC - The UNBC Timberwolves held their own against the reigning national champions, the Trinity Western Spartans, on Saturday afternoon but a second half push by the Spartans put the Timberwolves behind 2-0. The Spartans move to 6-0-1 after the win, with the Timberwolves falling  to 0-7-2.

The Spartans kick started the Timberwolves' adrenaline early in the game when a cross from Trinity Western's Seina Kashima (Burnaby, BC) crossed the ball into the left side of the box but sent it just out of reach of Krista Gommeringer (Calgary, AB). The close call from Gommeringer snapped the Timberwolves into high gear.

The Timberwolves made it through their second scare in the 21st minute, when Alessandra Oliverio (Calgary, AB) found space down the left side of the field and worked her way past the Timberwolves defender. UNBC keeper Jordan Hall blocked the shot and was able to save the subsequent rebound as well, keeping the Spartans off the board for the first half. Heading into the break the Timberwolves and Spartans remained tied 0-0.

In the 66th minute the Spartans found the break they needed to get on the board. A foul in the box awarded Oliverio a penalty kick which she made good on. With a 1-0 lead the visitors kept pushing the Timberwolves who responded with quick counter attacks. Long balls up front to striker Sidney Roy (Burnaby, BC) gave her the opportunity to get her team into the Spartans' half but the Timberwolves lacked the numbers to put themselves into a dangerous attacking position.

The Timberwolves kept their composure on defence, fending off the Spartans' advances. In the 75th minutes Kashima was able to carry the ball through the midfield and into the box only to have the possession kicked away by Timberwolves centre back Tanya Grob (Quesnel, BC).

The Spartans netted their final goal in the 79th minute. Gommeringer took the ball down the right side of the field and cut it hard across the box, slotting the ball inside the left post and past the Timberwolves keeper. The scoreline would carry until the final whistle, giving the Spartans 2-0 win over the Timberwolves and three more points in the standings.

The Timberwolves will have their second of two against the Spartans Sunday afternoon at the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League fields. This will be the final home game for the Timberwolves, the game is set to kick off at 12 p.m.
