No. 9 Vikes sweep Timberwolves

Sidney Roy

Prince George, BC - The UNBC Timberwolves women's soccer team fell for the second day in a row to the nationally ranked University of Victoria Vikes. The Vikes move to 5-0-1 while the Timberwolves fall to 0-6-2 after a 6-1 decision in favour of the Vikes Sunday afternoon.

In regular fashion the Timberwolves started the game on the front foot, playing long balls over top to striker Sidney Roy (Burnaby, BC). Roy was able to go by herself early after receiving a ball from Georgia Lahti (Port Moody, BC). Roy used her speed to move around the Vikes defenders but shot high, sending the ball just inches over the crossbar.

While the Timberwolves continued to bang long balls to their forwards, the Vikes worked through their midfield getting the ball to Jaclyn Sawicki (Richmond, BC) to distribute. In the 16th minute Sawicki played through to Emma Greig (Tofino, BC) who fired the ball just outside the far post. The Vikes converted their first goal in the 27th minute when Caitlin Millham (North Vancouver, BC) followed up a shot from Greig and slipped the rebound back past UNBC's recovering keeper.

UNBC tried to fight back by increasing the pressure from their back line, doubling up coverage on person with the ball. UVic was able to capatilize on the double coverage with two quick goals. Greig netted her first of the game in the 43rd after she beat her defender in a foot trace, the next came a minute later from Millham who tapped in a cross from Carlita Branion-Calles (North Vancouver, BC). Millham's late first half goal put the Vikes up 3-0 heading into the break.

The second half showed more of the same, the home side battled to keep the Vikes out of their end, pushing the ball up field while the visitors worked the ball through the middle forcing the Timberwolves back on their heels.

The relentless effort from UNBC paid off in the 52nd minute. Midfielder Tianna Rossi (Prince George, BC) played the ball straight up the middle to Roy, Roy turned and burned past three defenders before sailing the ball into the back of the net.

With a 3-1 lead the Vikes continued to step on the gas, netting three more goals before the end of the game. Greig was first to strike, finding the back of the net off a turnover in the 64th minute, followed quickly by Sawicki in the 66th. The final goal of the game came from Teressa Anania (Winnipeg, MB) who knocked back a short kick from the Timberwolves keeper in the 82nd minute.

The final score in the women's game saw the no.9 University of Victoria Vikes defeat the UNBC Timberwolves 6-1.

The Timberwolves return to the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Fields next weekend for a double header Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5 against the Trinity Western Spartans.

The University of Victoria Vikes will return home to host the UBC Okanagan Heat Friday, October 3 followed by the Thompson Rivers WolfPack Saturday, October 4.
