Timberwolves fall to Thunderbirds

VANCOUVER - The UNBC Timberwolves women's soccer team fell short in a 5-0 loss to the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field.

The game saw a confident performance by the Thunderbirds from the beginning. The ball possession and quick lost ball recovery by the 'Birds forced the Timberwolves to be in defensive mode throughout the game.

UBC opened scoring in the 20th minute by 2013 Canada West Rookie of the Year Jasmin Dhanda. Three minutes later, Nicole Sydor was able to tap in a rebound past UNBC's recovering keeper making it a 2-0 lead. The Thunderbirds constant pressure led to a lot of corner kicks that resulted in close chances but were unsuccessful.

UBC's right flank was a common danger source, as full back Meagan Pasternak linked up beautifully with the right-winger Taylor Shannik to produce various scoring chances.

The gap got bigger when Amrit Berar scored the third goal at the 58th minute from close range. Goal of the day came in the 73rd minute from a beautifully executed free-kick by the dynamic right back Aman Shergill.

The last goal of the day came in the 88th minute by Dhanda who received a great through pass from substitute midfielder Reetu Johal. 5-0 was the final score in what seemed to be a solid Thunderbirds statement for other teams in the league.

This win is UBC's first this season (1-2-0) as they prepare for a repeat showdown with UNBC (0-1-2) tomorrow afternoon at 12 noon on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium.
