UNBC checks off final step in CIS membership application

VANCOUVER – The University of Northern British Columbia and Mount Royal University were both granted full Canadian Interuniversity Sport membership status on Thursday, while MacEwan University became a probationary member of the national governing body of university sport.

The announcement came as part of the CIS annual general meeting, which concludes on Friday at The Sutton Place Hotel Vancouver.

UNBC and Calgary-based Mount Royal University become the 54th and 55th full-time members of CIS. Both institutions have been competing in the Canada West conference and CIS as probationary members for the past two seasons.

“We are excited and proud to see Mount Royal and UNBC achieve full CIS membership status and to welcome MacEwan to the CIS family,” said CIS president Dick White. “Our organization has experienced a very healthy growth in recent years and there is no doubt these three institutions will make an outstanding contribution to our leagues thanks to their passion and commitment to excellence.”

Today’s vote was the final step in the CIS membership process, the affirmative vote sealed UNBC’s application process. No longer a probationary member, UNBC can now vote within the Canada West and CIS as well as have staff sit on various committees organized through the two university sport bodies.

“UNBC Athletics is happy to officially be granted full members of both Canada West and CIS,” said UNBC Director of Athletics and Recreation Loralyn Murdoch after the vote was completed.  “We are looking forward to having voting privileges and the opportunity to have our student-athletes compete at the highest level of university sport in Canada.”
