Timberwolves fall short in final home game of the season

Prince George, BC - The Timberwolves fell short to the UFV Cascades in their final home game of the season. The Cascades move to 15-5 after defeating the Timberwolves 67-61. The Timberwolves now fall to 4-16 after their loss Saturday night at the Northern Sport Centre.

The Cascades were led for the second night in a row by Jasper Moedt (Abbotsford, BC) and Kevon Parchment (Toronto, ON). Moedt and Parchment netted 17 points apiece, while Klaus Figueredo (St.Albert, AB) chipped in 14.

Graduating players Charles Barton (Vernon, BC) and Daniel Stark (Prince George, BC) were instrumental for the Timberwolves. Barton put up a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds, Stark added 13 points of his own and pulled in six boards.

Both UFV and UNBC struggled in the first quarter with neither team shooting over 30 percent from the field. The Cascades consistently double-teamed Franck Kouagnia (Yaounde, CMR) down low, trapping the ball and making it difficult for the Timberwolves to run their offence. With 45 seconds left on the clock Gagan Sahota (Surrey, BC) came off the bench for the Timberwolves to drain a three and put his team up by two but the Cascades still had enough time to come back down the court and tie it up. Tied 11 apiece, both teams opened the second quarter firing.

The Timberwolves came out first and pulled ahead of the Cascades early in the second quarter. The home team relied on the outside to gain ground over UFV, which proved successful a minute and a half in when Jibreel Stevens (Tacoma, WA) drained his first three of the game to give the Timberwolves a one point lead. The lead would not last long, both teams took turns pulling ahead of the other throughout the quarter. Amrit Gill (Port Albernie, BC) tied the game at 18 when he hit his first shot of the night, followed by a Klaus Figueredo (St. Albert, AB) fast break to give the Cascades the advantage. With both teams playing a fast paced game and looking for the transition basket the game stayed tight. Up 33-28, it looked like the Timberwolves were going to sit on the largest lead yet until Figueredo came down the court, fired a long three and banked it in at the buzzer. At halftime the Timberwolves maintained a narrow 33-31 lead over the Cascades.

The Cascades pulled ahead of the Timberwolves in the third quarter, outscoring them 18-15. Their ability to steal the ball and transition it into the fast break gave the Cascades an upper hand to start the second half. Kevon Parchment threw down his second dunk of the game after he stole the ball half way threw the third. Parchment's dunk put the Cascades within three points of the Timberwolves. UNBC looked like they were going to hang on to the lead when Charles Barton (Vernon, BC) hit a three but the Cascades came back and answered with two of their own. A one point difference saw the Timberwolves trail the Cascades 49-48 heading into the final quarter.

The low scoring trend continued into the fourth with each team netting less then 10 points half way through the quarter. Jasper Moedt (Abbotsford, BC) finished strong for the Cascades giving them crucial points to stay ahead. With four minutes to play Moedt drove to the hoop, drawing the foul. The three point play put the Cascades up six points.

Dan Stark (Prince George, BC) battled low against Moedt to keep the Timberwolves within reach of the Cascades, at the two minutes mark it looked promising for Timberwolves' fans. Sahota drained another clutch three for UNBC to put them a basket behind the Cascades. A second chance shot for UFV saw Parchment draw the foul and go to the line - sinking both. The UFV lead extended to six after Moedt also went 2-2 from the charity stripe with 14.8 seconds to play. At the buzzer UFV had downed the Timberwolves 67-61, extending their winning streak to 12 straight.

The UFV Cascades will face the Trinity Western Spartans next weekend. The Cascades will play in Langley on Thursday, February 13 and finish their season at home on Friday, February 15.

The UNBC Timberwolves will travel to Calgary, AB next weekend to finish their season against the Mount Royal Cougars. Games are set for Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15.
