Third quarter push secures win for nationally-ranked Cascades

Prince George, BC - A big third quarter led the No.7 UFV Cascades to a handed win over the UNBC Timberwolves on Saturday night. The Cascades move to 15-5 after a 88-51 win over the now 4-16 UNCB Timberwolves.

The Cascades were led by fifth year guard Aieisha Luyken. Luyken netted 18 points for the Cascades while Courtney Bartle (Chilliwack, BC) added 12 of her own.

Mercedes VanKoughnett (Prince George, BC) once again led the Timberwolves in scoring. The fifth year guard finished her final game at the Northern Sport Centre by leading both teams with 19 points and nine rebounds. Fellow fifth year Emily Kaehn (Hixon, BC) topped rebounding with 12 boards and chipped in 14 points.

It was the final home game for four of the Timberwolves players and the team started the game energized and ready to play. Lock down defence from the Timberwolves forced early turnovers keeping the game close. Kaehn was having the most success for the Timberwolves working the back cut to beat the Cascades man-to-man defence.Trailing by only six to start the second quarter the Timberwolves were hanging in with the nationally-ranked Cascades.

The Cascades stepped up the pace in the second quarter. Aieisha Luyken led her team with 10 points at the break, six of those from behind the arc. With Luyken on the outside and Sarah Weirks working the post the Cascades extended their lead to as much as 20 points in the first half. Feeding off the energy of the crowd the Timberwolves pulled out a 7-0 run to finish the first half, leaving them trailing 40-27 heading into the break.

Turnovers plagued the Timberwolves third quarter. While the home side struggled to get to the basket the Cascades demonstrated their ability to score in transition. Pushing the ball down the court for quick baskets UFV outscored the Timberwolves 21-4. The Cascades stuffed the Timberwolves from the three point line, keeping them from draining a single three until the fourth quarter. The Cascades continued to push through the fourth quarter finishing the game ahead of the Timberwolves 88-51.

The No.7 UFV Cascades will face the Trinity Western Spartans next weekend. The Cascades will play in Langley on Thursday, February 13 and finish their season at home on Friday, February 15.

The UNBC Timberwolves will travel to Calgary, AB next weekend to finish their season against the Mount Royal Cougars. Games are set for Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15.
