Desktops
For all staff and faculty desktop machines we have
standardized on a Dell GX-990 computer. By having a standard machine we can
assure the users of a good overall machine that allows us to have procedures in
place that will ultimately make your computer experience at the University one
of the best available. If you need a more powerful computer please contact
Dale Laluk
at 960-5101 to discuss your requirements.
There are also various legal / purchasing requirements for why the computer purchases are put out to tender and one vendor selected.
We will not be purchasing other computer models or
manufacturers of desktop computers at this time. Each model that we have to
support, develop software packages, and arrange service causes a reduction in
the efficiency of using one model whenever possible. A few dollars saved in
purchasing a discount computer is more than spent by the University developing
all the background procedures to support that "discount computer". So
overall the policy of the ITS department is that if a non-standard machine is
purchased it will not be support by ITS. There are exceptions to this rule
concerning some specialized research machines. Please call to discuss.
For
laptop purchases there is no set model as the requirements for mobile
users vary so greatly. Some people need the ultimate in portability
while others need lots of computer power with a larger screen. We now have 4 different types of laptops available. They are summarized below.
