TSS Remote Access

TSS is UNBC's remote Terminal Server for faculty and staff. With TSS, you can access your email,
calendar, task list and H: drive from virtually anywhere.

Currently the Terminal Server supports only Microsoft Internet Explorer.
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. In the Address Bar, type tss.unbc.ca and press Enter
This will bring you to the Remote Desktop Web Connection Page
If this is your first time logging into TSS on your computer, you will be asked to install the Remote
Desktop ActiveX Control.
Windows 2000/XP Service Pack 1
1. A Security Warning window will appear asking you to install the Remote Desktop ActiveX control
2. Click on Yes
The ActiveX control will install.
Windows XP Service Pack 2
1. Two windows will appear on your screen, one telling you about the Information Bar and the other
telling you about the Remote Desktop Connection ActiveX control
2. Click OK for both windows.
3. The Information Bar is just below the address bar in Internet Explorer. It is a pale yellow color.
4. Right click on the Information bar
5. Left click on Install ActiveX control
6. A Security Warning will appear, click on Install
7. If you wish to access your local hard drives to copy files back and forth from your H: drive, click on
Map Local Drives checkbox.
8. If you are on dial up, or a really slow connection, you can change the size and color depth of your
screen to increase the speed of TSS.
9. When you are satisfied with your settings, click on the Connect button.
10. If you checked the box for Map Local Drives, when you click on the Connect button, the
Remote Desktop Connections window will appear, asking you if you want to connect your local hard drives.
Click on OK.
1. The Login Screen should be familiar to everyone.
2. Enter your username and password
3. Select the domain you normally log in to. UNBC has ADM, MED and UNI domains.
UNI is for faculty and staff not in the Northern Medical Program or Administration
MED is for faculty and staff in the Northern Medical Program
ADM is for administration staff and most casual employees, depending on where
they were first posted and how much they move around.
4. After you have entered your information, click OK to Log In.
You will notice some differences from your standard desktop in TSS. The most noticeable ones
are no clockand the TSS banner on the top of the page.
You also can't change the display once you're in TSS.
The Control Panel has changed a bit. You have limited options in TSS.
To see your H: drive and your local drives (if you checked the box for them)
1. Click on Start
2. Click on My Computer
My Computer will show you all drives you have access to. You can move files to and from your
drives here.
You can print from TSS if the TSS Server has drivers installed for your local printer.
1. Click on Start
2. Click on Printers and Faxes
If you see your printers in the Printers and Faxes window, you can print from TSS. If you don't see
your local printer, TSS doesn't have drivers for it.
There are two ways to access the Thick Client service in Windows XP.
1. Click on Start
2. Click on All Programs
3. Click on Accessories
4. Click on Communications
5. Click on Remote Desktop Connection
1. If you are on campus and require TSS, and do not wish to use Internet Explorer (or its down),
you can use the Remote Desktop Connection Service.
1. Click on Start
2. Click on Run
3. Type in MSTSC and click on Ok.
4. Enter the computer you want to connect to (tss.unbc.ca)
5. Click on Connect.
If this is your first connection to TSS, you'll have to set up your Outlook account .
On the screen, you will notice an icon below Outlook. Double click on this to run the setup for
Outlook.
The setup wizard will open, and you can set up your Outlook.
Before the Setup window opens, there will be a popup informing you that Outlook is going to importinformation from your email accounts.
Click on Yes to import your account settings.
After you import your settings, the Outlook setup wizard will open.
1. Click on Add A New E Mail Account
2. Click on Next
3. Select Microsoft Exchange Server
4. Click on Next
5. Enter exchange.unbc.ca in the box for Server Name. This is an alias for the Exchange Servers.
6. Enter your name, or your username in the Username box
7. Click on the Check Name button
8. When your name is underlined, click on Next
9. Click on Finish
