  UNBC Mail Services

Overview

UNBC currently has a hybrid approach to mail services. We are running a UNIX mail server and an Microsoft Exchange mail server. The Exchange server is the home to the majority of staff, student and faculty mailboxes. ITS provides central spam and virus filtering, web access to mail, and support for IMAP and POP. Mail Restrictions & Filtering

UNBC enforces several restrictions on mail. The following is a list of such restrictions or filtering:

Message Size

One of the most important restrictions is the sending size of messages. When sending a message, the message currently cannot exceed 20MB. This restriction is in place to ensure that mail is fast and efficient.

Spam & Virus Filtering

All email at UNBC is filtered through a central SPAM & Virus filter. If a message qualifies as SPAM or is a Virus, the message is removed from the system and will not be delivered to your mailbox. In addition, you will not be notified that the message was not delivered. The system detects over 99% of all viruses entering the mail system, but some messages still get delivered. This means that you should be cautious about opening attachments that you are not expecting.

Exchange Mail

Microsoft Exchange provides users with a rich messaging and collaboration environment. Using Microsoft Outlook, exchange mailbox users have access to items such as mail, calendar, tasks, contacts, and journal. etc. The Exchange service allows users to read email both at work and off campus, share individual folders/calendar and use public folders for departmental work. In addition to Microsoft Outlook, we also support web based access to email using Microsoft Outlook Web Access (owa.unbc.ca), and via IMAP or POP protocols.

The following topics will help you familiarize yourself with the service.
