Guide to Off-Campus Housing
If
you are planning to live off-campus and require information about bus
routes to and from UNBC, please visit the Prince George Transit System
website for more information.
When you start your search for a place to live off-campus, you may be
overwhelmed by the options and the vast differences in the types of
accommodation that you may find available to you. Plan to spend at
least a couple of days finding a place to live that is comfortable and
falls within your budget.
Before you enter into an agreement or sign a lease, make sure you are
aware of all the aspects of renting or leasing, from the
responsibilities of renting and the legal rights you have, to ensuring
that the accommodation is going to meet your needs.
It is a good idea to write things down. Make a list of questions that
you want to ask the landlord and write down the answers to compare with
others later on. It is easy to forget or to become confused at the end
of the day if you have visited several different rental accommodations.
The best policy is to make sure that you leave no stone unturned.
Where to Start
There is an off-campus housing registry available to all students. A listing on this board does not imply a
recommendation. The volume and turnover of accommodation does not allow
the time for inspection and approval of the listings.
There are also listings in the local classified section of the Prince George Citizen and the rental accommodation section of the Buy & Sell. Some listings for rental accommodation are also handled by local realtors.
Take some time to go through all of the listings. Friday's Citizen
seems to have the largest selection. Make a list of the accommodations
and phone numbers that fit within your budget and the area of the city
in which you would like to live. Then call and make appointments to see these
accommodations. Make sure you allow enough time between each
appointment; take a good look through the accommodation and talk things
over with the landlord.
