Living It

A strong connection to nature and the environment is simply part of who we are as northerners. From our leadership in renewable energy to our efforts toward sustainable waste management, we are being green through our actions.

Our green actions...

The UNBC Bookstore offers reusable bags made from recycled pop bottles, eliminating more than 10,000 plastic bags from being used each year.

In partnership with UNBC, the student funded group Prince George Public Interest Research Group (PGPIRG) operates a compost program that annually deals with eight tonnes of organic material produced on the campus.

UNBC purchases all of its furniture from Calstone Inc., a 100% Canadian, family owned and operated business that designs and manufactures furniture products in an environmentally and socially responsible fashion.

UNBC, NUGSS, Students for a Green University, PGPIRG, and the Prince George Farmers' Market have created the University Farmers’ Market (UFM). This project aims to promote local sustainability by creating a local market that addresses environmental, economic and social/health issues around food production and locally made products.

All UNBC undergraduate and graduate students participate in the U-pass transit program which offers a discounted rate for unlimited access to public transit and the aquatic centre. U-Pass users represent more than 40% of the transit riders in the City of Prince George.

Students for a Green University (SGU) is a student club that aims to educate, inspire, and motivate the UNBC community to reduce their environmental impact. SGU organizes environmental actions, events, and behaviour change campaigns focused on topics such as waste reduction, transportation, energy consumption and local food.

UNBC is participating in a province-wide energy competition in student residence called "Do it in the Dark." Students are asked to commit to reducing their energy consumption. These commitments are then attached to their facebook accounts. This site will track how buildings are doing and provide immediate feedback to students.

Share your green successes with the world.
