Living It

A strong connection to nature and the environment is simply part of who we are as northerners. Each of the four seasons offers tremendous opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoying the fresh air. On campus, there are strong recycling and composting programs and student clubs focusing on the environment and sustainability.

Successes

UNBC student Danielle Smyth conducted a  waste audit, analyzing the contents of garbage collected from throughout the campus over a week. Click here to learn more.

UNBC’s Communications Director Rob van Adrichem and student Danielle Smyth were appointed o the Citizen’s Conservation Council on Climate Action for the Cariboo-Prince George region.
The UNBC Bookstore now offers reusable bags made from recycled pop bottles, reducing the amount of waste it generates from plastic pags.

UNBC is partnering with Calstone Inc. to refurbish used office furniture to prevent it from being deposited in a landfill. The University also recycles asphalt that needs to be removed from the campus.
All major publications are printed on recycled paper, and pdf versions are provided online. UNBC has halved the number of academic calendars it prints every year.
All grade statements and course schedules are provided online, reducing the need to print and mail thousands of documents.
The student funded group Prince George Public Interest Research Group (PGPIRG) operates a compost garden that annually deals with eight tonnes of organic material produced on the campus. It’s the biggest composting program of any BC university.
PGPIRG also runs a recycling program throughout the student residence.
UNBC hosts the province’s primary bioenergy conference, held in conjunction with the Forest and Resources Expo.
UNBC Parking Services offers discounted rates and reserved spaces to car poolers. Read the policy here.
UNBC Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (Wildlife & Fisheries) student Barbara Durau has started a Facebook group to encourage and support members in the UNBC network to think and act Green. Click here to see the group and to join up (note: you need a Facebook account).
