Scholarships, Awards & Bursaries
At UNBC about
one in every five students receives an award, and the
total number of students receiving awards has doubled in the last ten
years. Donors continue to build endowments and support annual awards
for students across program areas and aimed at different need
criteria. This allows UNBC ‘s quality of educational and research
offerings to grow – attracting the best and brightest while also making
a UNBC education more accessible to students facing financial
barriers. This year a total of 480 donor funded scholarships, awards
and bursaries were given to students valued at nearly $800,000.
Approximately 85% of these awards are at the undergraduate level. UNBC’s
goal is to continue to build scholarships, awards and bursaries
to attract and retain both undergraduate and graduate students, and grow
important program areas such as engineering, health, alternative
energy.
Please contact us if you would like to ask about, or contribute to a new or existing award.

UNBC is one of BC’s four
research-intensive universities with nine Canada Research Chairs, a BC
Leadership Chair, two research forests, the I.K. Barber Enhanced
Forestry Laboratory, and a wide range of research centres and
institutes. In 2010, UNBC was ranked first in a national survey of
Canada’s research universities, achieving top position in a category of
Primarily Undergraduate universities. As a small university, donor
support is important for UNBC to build upon its high caliber research in
such areas as Natural Resources and the Environment; Rural, Remote, and
Northern Health; and the Sustainability of Communities.

The UNBC Timberwolves are the
core of varsity athletics, and provide exciting spectator sport for the
Prince George community and Northern BC. This year, The Canada West
Universities Athletics Association supported UNBC’s bid for membership,
meaning in 2012 the Timberwolves will compete in Canada’s top
university athletic association in both mens and womens’ basketball and
soccer. Donor support is needed to lift these young teams into a new
caliber of sport through scholarships, awards, and travel expenses. The
Wolf Club, and Adopt-an-Athlete are important fund-raising campaigns.

To build the brand of
‘Canada’s Green University’ donor support is important for unfunded
initiatives. Giving here has been dedicated to the UNBC Bioenergy
Scholarship and Bursary Fund, Green Day activities, and the bioenergy
facility fund. In 2011, UNBC tied with Harvard University for a campus
sustainability award by the Association for the Advancement of
Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). |
