Giving Today Makes an Immediate Difference

Giving to UNBC provides a valuable opportunity to give back to an institution that is helping build and shape the north. Considered only a dream a decade or so ago, UNBC's support is built on annual donations, large and small. Contributing today, helps UNBC achieve its goals while maximizing donor tax and financial benefits today.

Cash Gifts

A gift of cash or cash equivalents can be made to any existing fund or academic program at UNBC, or it may be used to establish a named scholarship or bursary. You can donate through a lump sum or through convenient monthly donations.

Supporting UNBC on a monthly basis provides a stable, convenient method of providing a donation over a longer period of time. You can have a specific amount charged monthly to your credit card or have automatic withdrawals taken from your bank account (you will be asked to supply a "void" cheque). UNBC faculty and staff also have the option of setting up convenient bi-weekly payroll deductions. Monthly donors can choose to have their tax receipts mailed to them monthly or annually.

Matching Gifts

If you work for a matching gift company, you may be eligible to double or even triple the value of your gift to UNBC. Download the following list to see if your company is registered, or check with your firm's Human Resources Department.

Public Traded Securities

A gift of publicly traded securities transfers ownership of stocks or bonds to UNBC. This type of gift provides significant tax advantages as only 25% of the capital gain (half the regular inclusion rate) will be included in your income. The charitable tax receipt will not only offset the capital gain tax payable, but other income as well. Similar tax advantages exist for gifts of stocks received through stock options.

Real Estate

A gift of real estate will result in a donation receipt for the fair market value of any property. The most attractive aspect of this donation is that you can give a gift of land today, while retaining a residual or lifetime interest. This allows you to enjoy the use of your property for as long as you live and receive a tax receipt for your donation.

Life Insurance

A gift of life insurance can be a significant future gift at an affordable present cost. You'll receive a tax receipt for the policy's cash value and any subsequent premium payments you make.

Interest Free Loan

An interest free loan to UNBC provides cash to meet any temporary needs or the ability to earn interest income. The loan may be repayable at a specified time or it may be a demand loan. Since the capital is returned to you, your gift will not affect your plans for estate distribution.

Strip Bonds

A strip bond enables you to make a larger gift on a discounted basis now. You will receive a donation receipt for the market value of the bond at the time it is given. UNBC benefits from receiving either the market value of the strip bond now or the redemption value later. A strip bond is an alternative to a gift of life insurance where securing a policy is not desired or possible.

Charitable Gift Annuity

In exchange for a contribution, UNBC contracts to make fixed, guaranteed payments to the donor and/or another person for life. After which, the remaining principal becomes a legacy to UNBC. As the donor, you would receive guaranteed payments for life and these payments are often larger than the interest received on a GIC or other fixed income investment.

Gifts in Kind

Valuable collections such as works of art, rare books, paintings or antiques can be subject to estate taxes. By donating such items now, you can reduce your taxable estate and reduce your taxable income the year the gift is made. The amount of the charitable donation receipt issued is based on the fair market value of the property on the date of the gift.

Contribution Options

Depending on the type of option chosen, each donation comes with different benefit to the donor and UNBC. A breakdown of these different benefits is provided below.
